Still I Rise Art Print Gets a Fresh New Look
Fans of my popular ‘Still I Rise’ art print are in for a treat as it returns this week with a fresh new look to coincide with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
It was a request from one of my collectors for the piece to maybe return for the jubilee, that first sparked the idea. I didn’t want to update the design to become overtly ‘royal’ but rather a refreshed look and a nod to the occasion.
The newly updated ‘Still I Rise’ art print is created in red, white and blue, to mark the jubilee. The tattoos have also had a special makeover, with a Queen tattoo now proudly on show. I liked the crown connotations of strength, honour and the capability to rule your own life.
I also wanted the word Queen to feature as again this has the associations of being a boss, of strength, independence and self worth.
My extremely limited edition ‘Still I Rise’ lady is still as fierce and fabulous as ever and now showing she’s the queen of her destiny.
The Story Behind The Design
My ‘Still I Rise’ illustration was originally created back in 2018, using brushmarkers and fine line pens. It was a relatively small hand drawn illustration and I was surprised when I put it in my Etsy shop and it sold almost immediately.
The design came about when I was creating new pieces for a special event I was attending. The event was to celebrate women in the arts and so I wanted to create a strong and inspirational character. An image that could symbolise female strength, power and determination.
The phrase Still I Rise resonated with my own tenacious nature. If someone ever tells me I’ll never manage to do something, that only lights a fire within me to prove that I will. Whenever I get knocked back I’ll try and pick myself up and keep fighting onwards. Everyone has their own struggles, many of which no-one else will ever know of. I wanted my image to symbolise pushing through and prevailing.
Later that same year I decided to release the image as limited edition giclée print run of 50. Perfect timing for a solo art exhibition I had coming up.
‘Still I Rise’ was my first limited edition print run to completely sell out, leaving many sad they would never be able to own it.
A Deeply Resonating Design
I never thought that ‘Still I Rise’ would become such a popular design when I created it. It was also amazing to hear some of the stories of some of the people why purchased it and why.
I have had the piece described by people who have bought it as beautiful, powerful, empowering and inspirational. Hugely flattering for me but also something I always strive to carry through the characters in my artwork.
One lady described how she had escaped an abusive relationship and this image had become a symbolic reminder of her breaking free. She now displays it on her wall to signify her strength in her new start.
I had never imagined my artwork touching people in such a deeply personal way.
